Presented by Gisèle Rapp-Meichler
Patrice Kirchhofer (1953-2019) defined himself as a “filmmaker, musician, artist, writer and conference presenter”. He was the author of about thirty films, some of which existed in multiple versions and would transform after each screening, evolving with his reflections, in faithfulness to the investigative spirit of this strain of cinema. The work of Patrice Kirchhofer became known in the 1970s, as much through his activism in the film community as for his cinematographic explorations in search of movement in photography – where animation was suggested in the intervals between still images, and the relation to the image was constantly examined from a political standpoint. Music also participated in the sought-after illusion, as did – and this is often overlooked – faces, characters and filmed or photographed landscapes. Patrice not only filmed known figures like Dominique Noguez, Stuart Sherman and France Huser, but also inserted portraits of his colleagues or friends from different walks of life, as well as of himself, in his own non-Hitchcockian way. Sometimes, one face evokes another. Dare we say that his films are self-portraits in which he distills clues in his own facetious way?
– GRM
To open the program, Raphaël Minnesota, author of Patrice Kirchhofer – Un cinéma pariétal (awaiting publication by the Presses du réel in October 2022), will present a 15-minute excerpt of a collection of interviews conducted in preparation for the book. The screening will be followed by a convivial reception at the Luminor’s Salon, where the book will be available for purchase.
