Atelier 105 is an artist residency proposed by Light Cone since 2014 thanks to the support of the Île-de-France Region. It allows artists who work in the field of experimental cinema to complete the digital post-production of their films in a profesionnal technical context – a rare chance for those whose work often remains in the margins of more conventional support opportunities.
Because the residency attracts filmmakers from a variety of backgrounds and artistic traditions, the selection proposed here is naturally – and happily – heterogeneous. Still, some common threads can be found, between the mise en abyme of the cinematic experience, whether it be playful or unnerving, and the flows of abstraction springing from manually or digitally reworked images. Beyond their specific formal approaches, several films in the program explore the often deceptive workings of memory and the chasms of oblivion, inviting us to recall lost – or made up – stories and to reanimate endangered technical gestures.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers present.
