WHAT IS CINEMA? : FIRST SPANISH EDITION

The publishing house WunderKammer, in co-edition with the Museu Tàpies in Barcelona, presents ¿Qué es el cine? by Germaine Dulac, the first Spanish edition of What is Cinema?, originally published in French and English by Light Cone Éditions in 2019. Composed of the cineaste’s lectures (1925-1939), compiled by her partner Marie-Anne Colson-Malleville and preserved in the Light Cone archives, the book illuminates the vital role of this pioneer of the 1920s French avant-garde, as an innovator of modern cinematic thought, who was reflecting, early on, in a sustained and analytical way about what cinema is.

This publication accompanies the exhibition Germaine Dulac. Je n'ai plus rien, at the Museu Tàpies in Barcelona, from October 16, 2025, to February 22, 2026. Curated by Imma Prieto, director of the Museu Tàpies, and Imma Merino, film critic and university lecturer, this exhibition dedicated to Germaine Dulac proposes a reflection on how the avantgardes reduced the profile of certain artists who challenged hegemonic and heteropatriarcal discourses, as imposed by society between the wars. This exercise involves reviving the memory of a period when many of these women were relegated to obscurity by art history, despite the fact that their practices were fundamental for the development of 20th-century artistic movements.

Organized in partnership with Light Cone, the exhibition presents six films by Germaine Dulac from its catalogue, alongside other works and archival materials by the artist.
