Prayers & Posing began from a desire to look closely at bodies in a bodybuilding gym. The film takes the gym as its main environment, approaching it as a place of devotion and display, shaped by repetition, comparison and excess. The film moves through a series of interiors: the inside of a gym, the inside of a camera, the inside of books, and the inside of a home, staging scenes between looking and being looked at. Shot on 16mm, using a variety of film stocks and double exposures, the film returns to the same places over time, focusing nervously on bodies, machines and surfaces as they are held within the gaze.
Alexandros Pissourios is a filmmaker and artist based between London and Cyprus. Working with 16mm film, his practice develops through sustained engagement with specific places and situations that he returns to, combining observational processes with constructed forms. His films develop through association, allowing thinking to remain open. Looking is treated as a charged act, shaping what comes into view and how it is looked at.
