Screening in partnership with the Bismuth Lemaître Guymer Endowment Fund, presented by Federico Rossin
Maurice Lemaître (1926-2026), artist, poet, filmmaker, and a leading figure of Lettrism, would have turned 100 this year. Light Cone joins in the celebrations of a century of radical creativity by presenting a program of films from its collection.
Maurice Lemaître is 100. We wish to celebrate this as if he were still alive, for if his entire cinematographic oeuvre is an exploration of the untapped potentialities and virtualities of the Seventh Art, then death has lost the chess game against him, since his films are renewed at every projection, always new in the minds of us viewers in our search for experiences of liberation from the yoke of capitalist spectacle. Since cinema itself was at the heart of Lemaître's vast filmic oeuvre, to celebrate him, we have constructed this program like a true film screening, one that will slowly build up in our minds only to be destroyed again, for his films dismantle, one by one, all the ingredients of commercial cinema. Always at the forefront for over sixty years of creativity, Lemaître was a tireless inventor of cinematic forms and ideas, a radical experimenter who challenged the very concepts of cinema, film, projection, and direction. These films bear witness to an extravagance that is still relevant today, for Lemaître went further than most other experimental filmmakers, testing the territories of a cinema open to collaborating with the public, creating "imaginary" films, destroying and reinventing the very idea of a "screening". Imitating Lemaître's anti-bourgeois and fiercely provocative style, we proclaim, "If you're simply expecting to see films, don’t come to this screening!"
