SUPER 8MM: THE LAST FRONTIER is a limited-edition, handmade exhibition catalog produced to accompany presentations by four American Super 8mm filmmakers: Willie Varela, Joe Gibbons, Peggy Ahwesh and Saul Levine at The Currier Gallery of Art, Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1987.
The small booklet features an introduction by the series curator, 4 artist’s statements including the titles of the 26 films screened, 4 original essays by other artists, and 10 rare photographs of the films and filmmakers.
Each text demonstrates the close working relationship and camaraderie shared between the Super 8mm experimentalists of the 1980s: Stan Brakhage on Varela; Tony Conrad on Gibbons; Keith Sanborn on Ahwesh; and Marjorie Keller on Levine.
Except for Brakhage’s letter dated 26 January 1986; all texts were newly commissioned for the exhibition and have not been reproduced elsewhere.
Printed via xerography on bright color paper, the title page also features a hand-stamped ink graphic, and the cover is adorned with a hand-tipped illustration, Eye Reflecting the Interior of the Theater of Besancon (1804) by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, provided by Annette Michelson.
