"I filmed Sonic Youth's concert at Hammersmith in London in 1986. I had discovered them a year before in London, they opened for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, I was literally blown away by their wild and enjoyable music. Learning that they were coming back there the following summer, I went there with a small Fuji camera and 4 super 8 silent reels. These reels slept in my home not knowing what to do with them, until my meeting with the filmmaker Raphael Maze to whom I proposed to work on it together, him directly on the image and on my side to bring a soundtrack. I thought the soundtrack in the idea of a deconstruction, of remixing their music in a noisy chaos (which was that of this sonic youth), playing the single “Brave Men Run (In My Family)” in a record player (a vinyl eaters) connected to a chain of electronic effects plugged into a Fender guitar amplifier; feedback games leveling out the audible fragments of the song. Mixing noise sounds with visual flickers. This film is a tribute to Sonic Youth, who beyond exciting, radical and new music, was also a group opening us to other experimental American artists and groups and reconciling us with electric guitars." – Michel Henritzi
"In our Sonic Youth’s film “Hammersmith 86” Michel Henritzi plays with the energy of broken music from the 45 rpm « Brave men run (in my family) » with a radical technique which intensifies the sound explosions and coordinates and accelerates the collision of the images drawn of the film. I used a scan to work on these images, filtering them in black and white, increasing the contrast and mixing them with my other reels made during my American travels. I was looking for construction lines revealing the chaotic rhythms of my visual experiences to assemble with that of this super 8 of a Sonic Youth performance, it is a hymn to chaos but also to a rediscovered freedom." – Raphaël Maze
