LUNETTE

by Mark STREET
2024 / Super 8 / color / sound / 1 screen / 8' 30

Shot at night in Paris on Super 8 film through various magnifiers, this most iconic city becomes unfamiliar, and then somewhat familiar again.

“A short film that visually and personally revisits Stan Brakhage’s The Text of Light, a marginal work in the history of experimental cinema and even within the filmmaker’s own body of work. During his wanderings through the streets of Paris, Mark Street distorts his visions through lenses once used by a relative who was losing her sight. From this starting point, the film asks how we construct what we see. The succession of homemade lenses creates estranged landscapes that flicker between spontaneous documentary and hallucination; an iconic city becomes unrecognizable, and a drifting gaze indulges in an experimental play of lights expanded by glass, avoiding the programmed lens changes of a camera. As a counterpoint, silence turns the images into mute mental flashes, while sound amplifies the zigzag between document and distortion.” Super 8 Infinito Festival, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2025. Jury’s Honorable Mention
