Nationality: Canadian
Chris Gallagher was born in Vancouver, Canada and attended Vancouver College, The University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. He has traveled extensively and taught at the University of Regina during the eighties and is now an Associate Professor of film at The University of British Columbia. His first film Sideshow was read as both humorous and disturbing and another early work Big Red brought humor to the structural film tradition. Both films launched his career but are generally not available today. From his earliest work to the present, Gallagher has examined the philosophical paradoxes and contradictions in our perception of the spacetime continuum by taking, often just everyday, imagery and by applying his creative cinematic strategies his representations reveal the extraordinary in the ordinary. One could say his work is characterized by the application of uncommon sense to the natural world as a means to reformulate linear experience in a block universe context. His later features such as Where is Memory approach difficult real subjects with a fictitious theorem, referred to as ficumentary, that provokes insightful exhilaration for some but also insecurity for others as one does not always easily recognize the relationship between the form and the content.
Gallagher's application of uncommon sense to the physical artifacts of our media saturated existence has also been applied to other art practices such as photography, sculpture and performance work
