CRITICAL THRESHOLDS: LESLIE THORNTON & ALICE LOVEJOY

A conversation between Thornton, Lovejoy and the audience will accompany the screening.

Critical Thresholds grows out of a dialogue between media artist Leslie Thornton and media historian Alice Lovejoy about the hidden and evolving histories of technology and power structures from the mid-20th century to the present, especially those of the moving image and the atomic bomb. Emerging roughly fifty years apart—film in 1896, the bomb in 1945—these two technologies are intertwined, including through the major role that Eastman Kodak played in the development of the atomic bomb (a history that Lovejoy unfolds in her 2025 book Tales of Militant Chemistry: The Film Factory in a Century of War), and in the work of Thornton, a child of the Cold War whose father and grandfather worked on the bomb deployed in Hiroshima. This selection of Thornton’s works—ranging from her early film Peggy And Fred in Hell: The Prologue to her most recent project If You Give Me My Name—explores these entangled histories alongside Thornton’s artistic engagement with the “space of science," with History as an invention and construction, and with the impact of technologies on cultural, societal and linguistic formations. Films by Jérôme Cognet & Karen Luong, Maki Satake, and Sara Sowell expand on these themes, amplifying questions about archives, light, technology, and flight that are threaded throughout Thornton’s work.
