Marie Menken (1909-1970)
“Marie Menken was an underground filmmaker who inspired Stan Brakhage, Andy Warhol, Jonas Mekas and Kenneth Anger among others. A painter and collage artist, Menken produced nearly two dozen experimental short films with a 16mm Bolex camera hand-held to create rhythmic visual poems. She was physically imposing, and her volatile relationship with husband-poet Willard Maas inspired Edward Albee’s 'Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.' She became a Warhol superstar making appearances in 'The Life of Juanita Castro' (1965) and 'The Chelsea Girls' (1966).” —Bruce Posner
