Giulia Grossmann is a Paris-based artist and filmmaker whose work sits between experimental cinema and documentary. Her projects explore the relationship between humans and their environment, whether it be the Basque mountains, the Mexican desert, the Atlantic Ocean, the Icelandic volcanoes, or even the space separating us from the planet Mars. Her approach is rooted in scientific collaboration, spanning both exact sciences and social sciences, and seeks to blur the boundaries between scientific dreams and tangible reality. Through this hybrid approach, she reveals how science can open doors to other possible realities.
Her films have received the CNC Quality Award. A laureate of the Mira program from the Institut Français in 2023, she is currently working on La mémoire de la mangrove, a project filmed between Paris and Natal, Brazil, exploring this fragile ecosystem as a space of resistance for fishermen, scientists, and the indigenous Potiguara people.
In August 2024, she will embark on a sailing expedition with the ArticLab project in Iceland, while writing Ultima Thulé, a project linking Nordic mythology and marine biology in the Westfjords, supported by the Goethe-Institute and the ARTEc research and creation program.
In 2025, as a laureate of Villa Albertine, she will begin a research project titled Ocean Screen: From Surface Research to Abyssal Fictions, which will take place in marine biology laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and Roscoff, France.
