Giulia Grossmann was born in Paris in 1984.
Giulia Grossmann studied at the École Nationale d'Expression Plastique de Paris-Cergy. She obtained her DNSEP (Diplôme Nationale Supérieur d'Expression) in 2009 and studied anthropology at Paris Nanterre University. Her movies question our way of inhabiting the Earth, placing Man about the space that surrounds him: from the Basque mountains to the Mexican desert, from the Atlantic Ocean to Icelandic volcanoes, and the space that separates us from the planet Mars ...
Her movies have been developed in collaboration with scientists working in different scientific fields: from social to biological and exact sciences. This hybrid approach, in which scientists' dreams and reality intertwine, allows her to tell how science can open the door to other realities.
She recently received the CNC Quality Award for her last two films, "Pasaia" and "La réponse de la Terre", and was a finalist for the SCAM Experimental Work Award.
Her film "Proxima B" was selected for the "Talent Contemporain 2019" prize by the François Schneider Foundation.
In 2021, she was awarded the Agnes B Tara Océan residency and boarded the schooner for the Microbiomes scientific mission off the coast of Senegal. Since then, she has embarked on an exploratory cinematographic approach, seeing the ocean as the screen for our knowledge and projections, from surface research to the abysses of fiction, through a series of cinematographic projects. Laureate of the French Institute's Mira program, her project "La mémoire de la mangrove", due to be screened in Brazil in 2024, explores the complexity of the relationship between man and this fragile ecosystem, as a territory of resistance for fishermen, scientists and indigenous peoples. Also awarded the Artic Lab project, she will be setting sail on a sailing boat between Iceland and Greenland in August 2024, documenting the drift of icebergs. These two new projects are part of her cinematic quest to preserve the oceans and explore the relationship between man and his marine environment.
