FLOTTEMENTS : L’ÉNIGME DU QUOTIDIEN

In conjunction with the Dirk Braeckman exhibit, Light Cone will be presenting a program of experimental work from our collection alongside a selection of artists’ films. These three screenings revolve around concerns that are central to the work of this Flemish photographer: the fragmented representation of the female body, the layering of images derived from other sources, and the enigmatic presence of domestic objects uprooted from their everyday context.

L’ÉNIGME DU QUOTIDIEN

Tuesday December 16, 2014, 20:15

One of the central concerns of the films in this program is to approach domestic space and everyday objects as enigmatic entities that are endowed with a singular resonance. The artists here confront these objects and transform their very function into something aberrant, as is the case with Martha Rosler’s parody of cooking demonstrations in Semiotic of the Kitchen or the untamable objects in Mark Wallinger’s The Magic of Things, which float through a space devoid of any human presence. Such reinventions of the everyday invite us to wholly rethink the events that transpire in the most seemingly familiar of domestic spaces.
