Open-air screening in the gardens of La Ruche of films around Fernand Léger's Le Ballet Mécanique.
Presented by film historian Federico Rossin.
The seminal film Le Ballet mécanique is most often presented, these days, in programs composed exclusively of masterpieces from the 1920s avant-garde canon. With this screening, we do not intend to undo the similarities and commonalities between Ballet and the avant-garde corpus, but to propose a kind of savage philology that humorously pinpoints the film's sources of inspiration. We would like to follow the tradition of avant-garde movie theaters of the time, which would show artists' works alongside animations, travelogs, advertisements and scientific films, as well as gag films and westerns. Perhaps, in such company Le Ballet mécanique will reveal in its structure a kind of "meta" film program, and we will understand why Henri Langlois considered it as his fetish film and the secret origin of all his work to come. (F.R)
The 16mm print of Le Ballet mécanique is shown with the kind permission of the Archives du Film Expérimental d'Avignon (AFEA).
