Obscurum per obscurius, Ignotum per ignotius: it seems that Daïchi Saïto has adopted, from the outset, the ancient motto of alchemists "to go toward the obscure and the unknown by what is more obscure and more unknown still". His films are "ephemeral, transient". His film work, during the shoot as well as after, on the optical printer in the lab, is always done frame by frame, since for the Japanese-born filmmaker, "as soon as an image is born, it is already dead, replaced by a new cycle of life and death". His practice is evidently imbued with his studies of philosophy and Sanskrit: the invention of the Lumière brothers is for Saïto - in the footsteps of Cocteau - "death at 24 frames per second, or life at 24 frames per second; in any case, it's the same thing". These three 35mm films show us the Platonic trajectory of the filmmaker-alchemist who finds clarity in the obscurity of the cave. And they upturn our perception, as they force open our blinded eyes.
