Guest program by the organization Monoquini (Bordeaux) on the occasion of its 20th anniversary
Presented by Bertrand Grimault
Scratch, scratch. A hand scratches an epidermis grazed by a shiver. An unidentifiable creature passed through here, lost in the middle of a varied bestiary. Over the course of 75 minutes, other sensitive surfaces will be rubbed, penetrated, dissected, scattered. Small colored squares of transparent pellicle will be assembled in a mosaic whose pieces will not necessarily fit together but whose patterns will seem to compose a secret order. The absurd logic of dreams, proceeding by association of ideas and images, will preside over this exquisite corpus.
At the beginning resurfaced sparse, fleeting images (perhaps, from a distant memory or from a still warm past) at Light Cone’s invitation to compose a program drawing from its vast catalogue, preferably of films that are, if not obscure, at the very least little known. Certainly, this formidable collection holds a great number of pieces that invite on strange journeys to the limits of the grand means of expression that is cinema, often bordering with the fantastical and the hallucinatory. We tried to crack open the Pandora’s box of the imaginary for this screening rich in silver halides. The six films on the program – which, perhaps, are just one film seen from different angles, lead on a voyage of successive mirrors that double as metamorphoses or altered states. These are “inner” films, projections of a mental kaleidoscope that place in front of our eyes objects like keys opening different levels of interpretation, offering escape routes toward other universes where unknown languages are spoken. Images, mirages, unexpected or extravagant visual moments – cinema makes us waking dreamers.
