In the presence of Ute Aurand, presented by Federico Rossin
On the occasion of its recent acquisition of Ute Aurand's films, Light Cone is delighted to present on 16mm four films which could be seen as representative for her 40 years of filmmaking: “I film with a 16mm Bolex camera, handheld, partly edited in camera with a final montage done on the 16mm editing table. The recent Glimpses from a Visit to Orkney in Summer 1995 is silent like the longest film in the program, In die Erde gebaut (Building Under Ground). The shortest Sakura, Sakura was filmed in Japan and has sound like Four Diamonds, which I filmed in New England. Short and long, silent and sound, color and black & white are ingredients I like to play with.” (Ute Aurand, 2022)
“The diaristic form develops out of an inner dialogue with my surroundings, a silent visual conversation. The source of inspiration is daily life, the fountain which never stops and offers itself to everyone. It is a great joy and challenge to transform my inner dialogue into film. (…) My camera is always handheld, and I am moving while filming, the rhythm is essential. You can call it "music", but for me it is rhythm. Rhythm is energy and movement, rhythm creates space in my films.” (Interview with Ute Aurand by Federico Rossin, 2013)
“When I first read haikus, I was struck by their visual intensity, by the condensed images, by the way what was said and unsaid were related, and how important the gap between the two is. It’s like jumping from one stone to another: the water in between is very important, but so are the stones. In my way of making films, the images are the stones, whereas what you can’t see, the invisible, is in the gaps in between. When personal matters are expressed through that invisibility, that is what I mean when I talk about something that is poetic.” (Ute Aurand in conversation with Robert Beavers, 2004)
