Light Cone and Braquage have the immense pleasure to invite Claudio Caldini, a key figure of Argentine experimental cinema, for an exceptional screening of his films followed by a projection performance.
Claudio Caldini began his cinematographic journey in the mid-1970s, a time when many porteño*** artists and filmmakers were taking up the Super 8 medium to emancipate themselves from the economic, technical, stylistic and ideological constraints imposed by the world of so-called professional cinema. These were also uncertain years traversed by a succession of governments whose level of ruthlessness fluctuated over time but which were all marked by extreme moral and political oppression that would continue until the dissolution of the military junta in 1983. In the 1970s, a small group of people, inspired by the spirit of happenings and interested in the possibilities opened up by the light and easy-to-use new cinematographic format, formed around a number of cultural venues with the goal of sharing with each other the results of their visual research. Alongside Narcisa Hirsch, Marie Louise Alemann, Jorge and Laura Honik, and others, over the years and in spite of — or in reaction to — the growing darkness in the country, Claudio Caldini would crystallize his interior vision by producing a body of work as supremely rigorous as it is profoundly personal and philosophically luminous.
Always evolving, Claudio Caldini’s work is not bound to any particular medium, technique or format. Starting in the 1990s, he has been experimenting with analog and digital video, creating surprising transitions and hybridizations between different media. In addition, he has reinvented his Super 8 practice by moving toward multiprojection performance with live sound improvisations. At this screening, Claudio Caldini will present a triple projection Super 8 performance Fantasmas Cromáticas, as well as a program of Super 8 films never before shown in their original format in France, and two recent video pieces.
