Screening curated by Lili Hinstin and Emmanuel Lefrant
To complement the ORIENT EXPRESS exhibition, Villa Medici, in collaboration with Light Cone, presents an exceptional screening of analogue films: an exploration of movement in cinema in all of its forms, in 16 mm and 35 mm.
It's a journey that begins in Rome, in front of a Colosseum shimmering with the vibrations of passers-by, and ends with the purest and most absolute movement: that of the earth around the sun. In between, a long walk through 1920s Germany filmed frame by frame, the first tracking shots made in subways and trains in Paris and New York at the beginning of the 20th century – immortalized in films that use early cinema as montage material – as well as multiple superimpositions of a walk that ends on a Canadian lake shore, or a painting that comes to life at the foot of Mount Fuji...
Between 1905 and 2016, the program traverses a century of cinema and movement, bringing together the works of some of the most important contemporary artists and experimental filmmakers of the 20th century. Form, light and movement, the fundamental characteristics of cinema, come together here in a radiant cinematic express journey. A dream journey, a magical celluloid dream.
