TOKYO Theatre Image Forum:10/14 3:30pm
NAGOYA Aichi Arts Center:11/3 3:45pm
A collection of experimental films from the Atelier 105 residency program, which fuses visual experimentation and documentaries into edgy works and garners attention around the world.
The five films of this program were all made in the past three years during the Atelier 105 residency program, created in 2014 by Light Cone, a Paris-based experimental cinema distributor.
The boundaries between genres have tended to blur over the past decade or two, and the films produced by Atelier 105 are no exception to this trend. The program features both films with strong formal components and works on the edge of documentary. The latter, by filmmakers whose filmography generally falls under the rubric of experimental cinema, take a bold approach to the question of reality, breaking with the codes of the genre and proposing a singular vision of the world: that of being both a witness to their times and transcending reality through visual artifacts, which distances them from the more traditional forms of documentary, such as observational film or “direct cinema.”

This program consists of my last four films, around other films that are essential to me, as a filmmaker but also as a viewer. As I have been trying to do for more than 20 years, the filmmakers who are accompanying me here continue tirelessly to investigate the medium, in search of its most fundamental characteristics. All completed within the last 15 years, those films – all projected in their original formats – are proof of the medium’s vitality and of its enduring vibrancy and magic. – Emmanuel Lefrant

TOCHIGI Kanuma Center : 10/18 - 7:00pm
In an age where digital images are the standard, two artists who insist on experimental expression on film are coming to Kanuma. Alexandre Larose, one of Canada’s most active moving-image artist working on film, presents layers of images and time in multiple exposures. Emmanuel Lefrant, director of the Paris-based distribution organisation Light Cone, which is behind genre-busting films, explores the materiality of film and the world of abstraction.
