Screening in the presence of Maki Satake and Keitaro Oshima, followed by a discussion.
As part of a joint program, Périphérie and Light Cone have put together an epilogue to the 29th Rencontres du cinéma documentaire entitled De proche(s) en proche(s).
Maki Satake was born in 1980 on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. A graduate of the Hokkaido University of Education in Sapporo, in her short films she combines animation and live-action photography. Her aim, as she puts it, is "to question the world in the interstices of recording and memory."
We have chosen to show the part of Maki Satake’s work that pays tribute to the constancy and attention with which a family – in this case her own – documents its daily life and its milestones: birthdays, periods of the school year (INTERVAL), small events (SLIDER) and big ones (VESTIGES OF LIVE). These photographs, films and sound recordings (A TAPE RECORDER), intimate and precious material of interest mainly to family members, are resolutely seized upon by the filmmaker, revived and shared through her cinematic gesture. Like her parents and grandparents before her, she, too, turns her lens towards her friends (ONE TIME), family members, the living, the dead (REMINISCENCES), and those yet to be born (WALK).
Shaking up the chronology and places of family memory, Maki Satake mixes temporalities, opening up gaps that the still frames inscribed in the field of the moving image multiply to infinity. The 'photographs,' or at least what we identify as such, that she takes into her own hands, placing them in front of herself in the frame, can be still or moving, translucent or opaque, superimposed or cut clean through. The images recomposed in this way create a subtle, complex interplay in which the motifs are both recurrent and never exactly the same. The photographs, however innocuous their content, take on a very special value, tinged with nostalgia and mourning for what has been and is no more. Roland Barthes is not far, and Maki Satake's work would surely have fascinated him. The thread of images thwarts our vain attempts at identification and ordering. All that's left is to let ourselves be carried away by the musicality of the editing, the poetry of diffracted time, to be amused – the playful dimension of Satake's work is very present – and to be moved, by rediscovering places and faces, to finally welcome a family memory which, from film to film, mysteriously finds its way into our own.
The program begins with SIMULATED SCENERY STUDY - LAND OF SMOKE, the latest film by Maki Satake's partner Keitaro Oshima. Born in 1977 in Kushiro, Oshima makes work that involves dissecting and reconstructing pre-existing material, such as postcards and other documents damaged by time. He is in charge of programming at the independent Marubakaikan theater and also teaches as an associate professor at the University of Hokkaido.
