Light Cone Editions presents an anthology of texts by Jean-Michel Bouhours on Paolo Gioli, in a bilingual edition (French and English), introduced by a preface by Georges Didi-Huberman.
Paolo Gioli (1942-2022), a central figure in the Italian experimental cinema of the 70s, developed, from his initial training as a painter, a body of work of over thirty films between 1969 and 2017, that parallel and intersect with his internationally acclaimed photographic work. Gioli's eminently “savage” approach to filmmaking, developed with limited resources, offers us a composite visual universe of fragments, but also “cinema-effects” in their natural state, like latent phenomena challenging the historiography of media technologies.
Featuring three essays written between 1995 and 2024, a long previously unpublished interview with the artist conducted in 2014, and a catalogue raisonné of his filmography, When the Eye Trembles by Jean-Michel Bouhours offers a journey through the many facets and inventions of Paolo Gioli's cinematographic work. As a preface, the book is introduced by a new essay by Georges Didi-Huberman.
The book will be available in bookshops in January 2025.
To launch this publication, Light Cone presents a screening of Paolo Gioli's films introduced by Jean-Michel Bouhours, When the Eye Trembles, on Tuesday, December 10th, at Luminor - Hôtel de Ville (Paris 4th).
This book has been published with the support of the Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap) and a generous contribution by Paolo Vampa.
