Vienna-based filmmaker and visual artist Viktoria Schmid is invited to present her work in dialogue with Light Cone's collection. The film program, conceived in chapters, is introduced by an installation piece and completed by a historical film (excerpt) from the collections of the Cinémathèque française.
After being greeted by the 16 mm film installation Attempt to Film Wind, the viewer is invited on a ride through a selection of Viktoria Schmid’s short films in 16 mm and 35 mm, alongside companions from Light Cone’s catalogue selected by the filmmaker herself.
The program offers an insight into Schmid’s various investigations, using the short format like a distillate: from her interest in early color film systems and using the film medium to transform everyday perception to her installing a projection screen in unexpected environments. Last but not least, the program includes her earlier hand-made darkroom films.
Schmid's work is situated at the intersection between the cinema and the exhibition space. The artist explores the history of cinematic devices and their different technical and formal possibilities. She has defined her own work as a way of “going back to the past to rethink the present”: by exploring the basic conditions of capturing and projecting moving images, she places the medium at the center of her work to reveal all of its potentialities.
* Lichtblicke: German expression for glimpses of light / moments of clarity / something to look forward to.
