CINEMA FOR THE EAR

In the presence of Jérôme Noetinger and Stefano Canapa

The musical and cinematographic avant-gardes have a common history, marked throughout the 20th century by the richness and inventiveness that have resulted from their meeting. In his seminal 2012 work, Les Cloches d'Atlantis, Philippe Langlois speaks of the fact that "the influence of musique concrète and electroacoustic music after 1945 and of the American minimalist movement starting in the 1960s-1970s, as well as the emergence of postmodernism in the 1980s, are the milestones that have multiplied the range of possibilities of the audiovisual dialogue." From Bells of Atlantis (1951) by Ian Hugo (whence comes the title of Langlois' book), where electronic music is used in a film for the first time, composed by the spouses Louis and Bebe Barron, to Thierry Vincens' masterpiece Giraglia (1968), in which Pierre Henry collaborated with the director by proposing the "Jerks" from Messe pour le temps présent for the film's soundtrack, electric circuits have not ceased to set the rhythm between the two disciplines. A case in point - Stefano Canapa's recent piece, the Reel to Reel series consisting of two films, which will be presented together for the first time in France, where the filmmaker captures the work of sound artist Jérôme Noetinger in order to portray its essence, via an approach that is both documentary and formally rigorous.

The screening, which will alternate films and sound pieces, will be an opportunity to explore the Cinéma pour l'oreille collection created in 1992 by Jérôme Noetinger through the Metamkine label* and to further investigate the dialogue between sound and image which finds an interesting extension in the use of the optical sound track in cinema: from the experiments of the Finnish pioneer Eric Tigerstedt, of which the artist Mika Taanila bears witness in his film Patent Nr. 314805, or the manipulation of the optical track explored by László Moholy-Nagy as early as 1930 with the very short Tönendes ABC, to the formal experimentations of British and American Structural filmmakers Lis Rhodes and Paul Sharits.

In relation to this session, and in the company of Stefano Canapa, Jérôme Noetinger will lead an improvisation/image workshop on the weekend of October 10 and 11, 2020 at Instants Chavirés in Montreuil. He will also present a carte blanche in three parts, between October 15 and 17.

*Created in July 1987, the Metamkine label is a mail-order catalog offering a wide range of electroacoustic and improvisational music, both historic and contemporary: from the first studies of musique concrète to the digital era, from the foundations of free music in Europe to the explosion of collectives, from the rage of one era to the tension and restraint of another... not forgetting more rock-and-roll subversions, recordings of historic blues, invented instruments and sound art in all its forms. The aim was to promote all this music that lives and survives outside the commercial circuits, to give the listener the opportunity to be curious, to take risks, to discover other practices, other conceptions of music than those imposed by audience ratings.
Between 1992 and 2002, Metamkine also released the Cinéma pour l'oreille (Cinema for the ear) collection, whose goal was to promote musique concrète through repertory works, pieces by young composers and commissioned compositions. Musique concrète, born in 1948 (invented by Pierre Schaeffer) is a music of fixed sounds that has many resemblances with cinema, also an art that depends on fixation. This collection, therefore, is intended to create a parallel with the moving image outside any narrative concerns. Metamkine was directed by its founder Jérôme Noetinger from its creation and until April 2018. Today, the organization has changed its name, becoming corticalart.com.
