Of the 23 filmmakers accepted for distribution at Light Cone in the last two years, female filmmakers constitute a majority. In anticipation of this year's International Women's Day, it is important to remind ourselves « qu’un homme sur deux est une femme » -- a French expression that puts into question the term « mankind ».
Many domains of our society are still, sadly, far from having achieved equality between the sexes -- the right to vote has only recently been accorded to female citizens of Saudi Arabia, while Vandana Shiva continues her fight in support of education access for Indian girls... This film program proposes to do its small part in restoring the balance by presenting a selection of films by female filmmakers who have recently entered the Light Cone catalog. We dedicate the screening to them with a double reference to the experimental festival in Knokke-le-Zoute and to the « riot grrrl » movement.
