Born in 1950 in Genoa into a modest family, Giovanna Puggioni quickly became passionate about art. In 1972 she completed her degree in History of Medieval Art, while taking courses at the School of Fine Arts in Genoa, where she practices serigraphy.
In 1974, she met Christian Lebrat with whom she would share her life and time between France and Italy. The following year, they made the film TROIS PETITS TOURS ET PUIS S'EN VONT, shot on the clim up the portico of San Luca in Bologna.
Until 2015, Giovanna Puggioni produced several works while teaching italian language and culture in Paris, then art history in her native region.
Her first solo film IN/CONTRO/LUCE (1976), uses a panoramic from black to white to restore the intrinsic qualities of light in a metamorphosis of the filmed subject.
Her subsequent films explore this conquest of light through a face-a-face encounter with the camera and film: camera movements, colored filters, overlays, and perfortaions of the film.
OLTREMARE, made in the summer of 1985 in the light of Filicoudi inaugurates her style of editing style directly in the camera. Together with LE DEJEUNER SUR L'HERBE, shot in Camoglie in 1992 with her students, the two films enhance the intensity of bodies and objects.
IRIS, shot with her daughter in 1997 in the medieval village of Triora, is constructed like a labyrinth of images.
QUATTRO STAGIONI (1999), superimposes the passing of time and seasons on the same film, shot through the window of the apartment where she lived in Paris. In 2006, with FUOCO, the first work of an anthology of matter (fire, water and earth) that would be interrupted by illness, she interweaves various fireworks, punctuates by holes made in the film with a needle.
First video opus, ROYAL GALA (2005), calls for the testimony of several friends and relatives of lettrist'artist Maurice Lemaître, in an exercise of admiration both for the man and for his work. Several other video essays remain unpublished and her filmography ends with V4 (IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU) (2010), variations on a space-time loop filmed live on the port of Genoa.
In 1983, she created with Christian Lebrat and the film historian Prosper Hillairet, the association then the publishing house Paris Expérimental, of which she was a constant support throughout her life.
In 1982, Tonino de Bernardi dedicated a whole section to her in his film DONNE.
