HUMAN REMAINS

1998 / 16mm / b&w / sound / 1S / 30' 00

HUMAN REMAINS illustrates the banality of the demonic through intimate portraits of five dictators. The film reveals the personal lives of Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Francisco Franco and Mao Tse-Tong. We learn intimate details of their daily lives, such as their favorite food, movies, habits and sex lives. No mention is made of their public lives or their place in history. Their personalities and psychological make-up are revealed through the details they give. The whole film is factual, mixing direct quotations with facts from their biographies. The use of voice-overs and English translations makes the film resemble a BBC documentary, giving it added verisimilitude. Irony and even humor are omnipresent. The deliberate omission of all the horrors for which these men are responsible hangs over the whole film. Human Remains questions this horror from a totally different, more obtuse angle, and reminds us that there are always new Hitlers among us.
