"Saturday, January 17th, 1987. Malik, 1.30pm. TRANCHES. Reading poems in Spanish and translating them, reading all the possible translations with hesitation or interpolations. Listening to La Niña de los Peines and trying to understand Lorca's fragment about her and the duende. Talking about elements that get grafted onto the film: stains, scratches, jumps, overexposed frames. Another film gradually covers (the solemn and unstable action of time) the original. The film changes color, age, identity. The trajectory of a lateral pan, like a sliding Japanese screen or a wall. Developing views on color: the real one, the one that is within the being and not in the appearance, the imposed one (the one of makeup).
Sunday, January 18th, 1987. Rue des E., 1.40am. TRANCHES. In Spanish, tajadas. ¿Tajadas de qué? Of anything; this is important. The film is this: slice, sliced – space, light, color, time. A line is this: slicing our vision. Above all, no counting, no counting of frames, above all no calculation." – Teo Hernández, notebook 15 sheet 32
