SCRATCH DIALOGUES #9

This online program is conceived in the form of a dialogue within our collection, with the intention of exploring possible relationships of analogy, filiation or interaction between the films.

In this edition, language becomes nonsensical and communication remains a mystery...

TEACHING THE ALPHABET
by Volker Schreiner
2007 / Video / color-b&w / sound / 3' 34

It's not a simple ABC, this found footage alphabet by Volker Schreiner. Schreiner reveals his qualities in collecting and choreographing footage from classic (Hollywood) films. The concept of alphabetical ordering is loosely maintained so there's room for a playful contribution from the subconscious.

AIUEONN SIX FEATURES
by Takahiko Iimura
1993 / Betacam SP / color / sound / 7' 00

"Iimura deconstructs our coherence as he shifts between the English Roman alphabet and Japanese characters, injects spoken Japanese and manipulates the computer images of his features. The images often take on geometical shapes, others recall the classical images from Japanese woodcuts of Samurai warrior grimace."

FRACAS
by Eduardo Menz
2007 / Video / color / sound / 4' 20

The dictionary definition of fracas is the following:
1. a noisy, disorderly disturbance or fight
Coincidently, it is also the final word of the 1930 National Spelling Bee which is held every year in Washington, D.C.
