Screening introduced by Vivian Ostrovsky
The term "pink-u" refers to Japanese films with nudity but not necessarily with eroticism as their main subject. As for "punk-y", it designates subversive, nihilistic, irreverent ideas or actions, often set to a rough and rapid musical beat. Particular attention is given to the doyenne of the program, Mary Ellen Bute, who, in 1940, rebelled against the status quo and created what she named the "Absolute Film", an explosion of colors, forms, movements – authentically 'Visual Music' avant la lettre.
