A prolific filmmaker with over fifty films to her credit, Marcelle Thirache (1946-2025) chose Super 8 as her preferred format, undertaking a series of experimentations with light and color that included painting on film as well as her initial practice of photography. She became interested in experimental cinema in 1982, attending the screenings organized by the newly-formed Light Cone. She joined as a member and remained loyal to the organization starting with her first films, which were made in 1987, and throughout her filmmaking career.
Marcelle Thirache described herself as an "artist who uses her camera as others use a brush" to "create paintings in motion, paintings or sculptures that move". The subjects of her study were the female body and natural elements – trees, water, minerals – whose sensuality she brought to the fore, similarly to her observations of statues or the places where she lived or that she cherished. "I have worked particularly on women's bodies, trying to show through my films that what we saw at the movies in general did not correspond to a woman's body. I've tried to show it differently because, although we may not see many bodies in my films, I work on the fantasy of the image. It always remains completely abstract. And it's up to each viewer to see the female body in these images. For me, this is much more sensual, much more erotic than what is commonly called sensual or erotic."
Marcelle's involvement in the feminist cause led to her participation in creating the group Dissolution/Six Solutions in 1991 with other female filmmakers from Light Cone.
During this program, composer Eugénie Kuffler, who collaborated with Marcelle on the soundtracks of three of the presented films (L'Ange du Carrousel and the two Abstractions), will accompany the opening and closing works.
