Emmanuel Lefrant has been invited to Kolkata by the Emami Art Experimental Film Festival to promote his work as a filmmaker and the Light Cone catalog. During his visit, he will present two screenings as part of the festival, as well as a master class.
"Going through Emmanuel Lefrant's work chronologically is like visiting a natural history museum: from the prebiotic soup photographed with a microscope, to the stars visible only through a telescope. We pass through a form of paroxysmal realism, which acts as an instrument of criticism of every naturalistic documentary record. Emmanuel Lefrant lives and works in Paris, where he makes films, all self-produced, exclusively on celluloid. The films lie on the idea of representing or revealing an invisible world (the secret forms of emulsion), a nature that one does not see. In 2000, he co-founded with the collective Nominoë, which created performances that have been played in many places, as the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Serralvès Foundation (Porto) or the Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR).

Based in Paris, Light Cone has been dedicated since its inception in 1982 to the distribution, screening, appreciation, and preservation of experimental cinema, actively promoting the genre both in France and internationally. Its catalog, comprising over 7,000 titles, constitutes one of the world’s most significant experimental film archives, bringing together works of diverse geographic, historical, and formal origins. The program presented as part of the Experimental Film Festival (EAEFF) organized by Emami Art aims to reflect this diversity but is mostly structured around European films (Italy, France, the United Kingdom and Austria) with the exception of Arash T. Riahi's film, who is an Iranian filmmaker.
The program revolves around the question of time and its multiple layers — and cinema's extraordinary ability to reveal its secrets. From the opening film — which relies on a simple device that disorients the viewer, at least until time unfolds to reveal the true nature of what is being watched — to the "woven" cinema of Rose Lowder, which allows multiple temporalities to unfold simultaneously, everything here demonstrates that cinema is the art of time.
The program concludes by focusing on a particularly fertile hub for experimental cinema in Europe: Austria, represented here by two generations of filmmakers.
