The American University of Paris welcomes American filmmaker
A deep dive into a 40-year career of cinematic experimentation and political engagement, this Lynne Sachs retrospective program explores questions of feminism and reproductive rights, war and trauma, experimental filmmaking, poetry, and how meaning is produced, transformed, and sometimes lost in processes of translation.
Since the early 1980s, Lynne Sachs has developed a body of work at the intersection of experimental film, documentary, and poetry. Her work explores the relationships between the body, the camera, and the materiality of film, bringing images, sounds, texts, and gestures into dialogue. She constructs her films from heterogeneous materials—archives, letters, portraits, diaries, poetry, and music—to examine the relationships between personal experience, memory, and history.
The question of translation also runs through her cinema: translation from one language to another, but also the passage from one form to another, from speech to image, from memory to its narration. Her films often take the form of open-ended inquiries, in which the intimate encounters broader historical and political experiences.
This screening will offer an opportunity to discover or rediscover her work and to engage with her about her filmmaking practice, her working methods, and the forms she develops at the intersection of documentary, essay film, and poetry.
The screening will take place in the auditorium of the American University of Paris.
Free admission by reservation only, subject to availability.
