Mike HOOLBOOM

Mike Hoolboom (born in Toronto in 1959) is a prolific and multifaceted critic and curator of Dutch and Indonesian descent. By the mid-1980s, he emerged as one of the most spontaneous and energetic personalities in Canadian experimental cinema.

In his early films, shot with his father's Super 8 camera, he sought to dismantle the mechanisms of cinematic editing to question language and narrative. This structural ambition later took on a more narrative tone, in the style of an essay or diary. He drew inspiration from autobiographical images and memories to support his study, using unused and recycled footage from his other films to create new ones. This act of actualization echoes themes of death, childhood, the body, and memory.

In 1989, he learned he was HIV-positive, which subsequently gave his films a more political dimension. In "House of Pain" (1995), he provoked his audience with increasingly explicit images of sexual transgression. In the late 1990s, his work addressed issues of perception in a mass culture saturated with images. Films such as "Dear Madonna" (1996), "In The Future" (1998), and "In My Car" (1998) compiled images from music videos, Hollywood blockbusters, European art cinema, and commercial television. By recontextualizing them, Hoolboom changed their meaning and invited his audience to reflect on what constitutes individual and collective consciousness. The short film anthology "Panic Bodies" (1998) is the cinematic expression of a direct and passionate confrontation with AIDS, receiving excellent critical acclaim at several international film festivals. In 2002, he completed a controversial biographical feature film about New York underground filmmaker and videographer, Tom Chomont ("Tom").

His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including Best Canadian Short Film at the Toronto International Film Festival for "Frank’s Cock" (1993) and "Letters From Home" (1996). As a critic, he has authored books and over a hundred articles on experimental film. He is also the co-founder of "Pleasure Dome," a collective of filmmakers dedicated to the dissemination of experimental cinema.
