Carl BROWN

Nationality: Canadian

"There is an exceptional filmmaker named Carl Brown in Toronto who has been working on the chemistry of film for years. He does not use the services of the laboratory at all, only at the end, when he draws a negative from what he has achieved." Michael Snow

Carl Brown, filmmaker, photographer and alchemist, was born in Toronto in 1959. After two years at the University of Toronto where he studied philosophy and psychology, he opted for film studies, which he completed in 1982 at Sheridan College. A figure in Canadian experimental cinema, he has directed more than twenty films. His production is presented in many festivals in America, Europe and Asia. He has collaborated a few times with Michael Snow who is in charge of the sound in "Cloister". The film "Brownsnow" brilliantly illustrates this reciprocal relationship. He uses chemistry (solvents, chlorine, colour precipitates, etc.) to play on tonalities and rhythms, as well as on the alterations in colour, contrast and grain of the silver substrate. He presented his films in France in 1991 with Barbara Sternberg, during the travelling event "La part du visuel", of which Rose Lowder was the curator. Since then, they have continued to work together but independently of each other. With "Fine pain", he approaches for the first time in his career the dual screen projection to broaden the experience of anxiety.
