Vincent Grenier was born in Quebec City, Canada. He lived largely in the US, mostly New York City. In spite of this, he was a frequent contributor to the Montreal Art scene of the 70s and 80s as well as the SF bay areas where he received an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in the early 70s. Grenier's experimental films and videos have earned numerous awards and have shown in North America, Europe and China at major museums, showcases and festivals. Grenier has made over two dozens films and since 1990 videos. His work was recently the subject of retrospectives at Media City, Windsor, Ontario and Images Film & Video Festival's Canadian Images Spotlight, in Toronto. He received a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 2010. He lived in Ithaca NY and taught at nearby Binghamton University.
"I met with Vincent in Fall 2001 at Binghamton University. He was Chair of the Cinema Department at the time, and I had to meet him to discuss the credits of the cinema related course that I had taken at a community college. He asked me a few general questions about the course then asked me a question, "do you know what mise en scène means?" I simply said yes and he signed the form to transfer the credits. At one of the individual meetings when I was taking his Digital Videomaking II course, we talked about the uniqueness of the digital format and how it could be presented with certain images or subjects. When we were learning about keying, Vincent showed us his digital video work, Color Study (2000), which was my first exposure to his work. I don't remember what he said, but I remember what I was thinking -- I was thinking of the similarities between the process of painting a still life from direct observation and the process of manipulating digital footage. Since then, I have watched many of his works, including his earlier 16mm projects, and I was fortunate to talk about them with him, except Moonrise (2022).
