Valentina Alvarado Matos is an artist who works around landscape, memory, and diaspora. Her practice often begins with fragments such as images, gestures, or materials and grows through process. She understands making as something open, shaped by movement, change, and attention.
She works with film, ceramics, collage, performance, and voice. Through these mediums, she explores how materials can carry time and memory. Her work develops slowly through repetition, layering, cutting, assembling, and waiting. Small actions matter. Things appear, disappear, and return in new forms.
Editing, collage, and reworking images are central to her practice. She is interested in the tension between control and chance, between building and eroding. Rather than fixed results, her works remain open, reflecting how memory and landscape are always shifting.
Her work has been shown at institutions and festivals such as La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Artium, Salzburger Kunstverein, Fabra i Coats, La Capella, the British Ceramics Biennial, Viennale, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Punto de Vista, Loop Festival, Cinemateca de Madrid, Filmoteca de Catalunya, Microscope Gallery in New York, and the California Museum of Photography.
She has participated in residencies at Hangar, La Escocesa, Cultura Resident Castellón, Matadero Madrid, LIFT Toronto, Dirdira Lab / Azala, Fora de Camp, and Visual Studies Workshop.
Alongside her artistic practice, she teaches and gives workshops at BAU, Escola Massana, EINA, the University of Barcelona, and EICTV in San Antonio de los Baños.
Her films are distributed by Light Cone and are part of the collections of XCèntric, HAMACA, and the Busan Museum of Art. Her work has also been included in the book Remains-Tomorrow: Themes in Contemporary Latin American Abstraction, edited by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill.
